ABSTRACT

Since the problem we are facing affects the whole world, this chapter focuses on open data with global coverage. Open geospatial data with global coverage has the advantage that anyone anywhere in the world can use the data in the same way for their specific part of the world. The notion of data being open is not only associated with free and unrestricted access to the data, but also with transparent and inclusive consensus-based decision-making, identified three different kinds of open geospatial data. Subsequently, several sources of relevant open geospatial data are presented and discussed. Administrative areas, place names and address data are also relevant when determining and reporting who may be affected by the predicted spread of the disease. Location-based data helps to answer questions useful for responding to the COVID-19 challenge. The chapter is concluded with an assessment of the availability and suitability of open geospatial data for responding to the COVID-19 challenge.
