ABSTRACT

Sea urchins have a long history as one of the principal model organisms of cell, developmental and evolutionary biology. This is because of their easy collection for both adults and gametes, synchronous embryonic development and transparent embryo/larva body. However, due to its long reproductive cycle, it has never been used as model in genetics. Recently, Temnopleurus reevesii was introduced as a sea urchin with a fast intergenerational time, and it has the potential to be applied to genetics. In fact, the homozygous knockout of T. reevesii using the CRISPR/Cas-9 system has been reported. In this chapter, I will introduce the biological characteristics of T. reevesii and its benefits as a model organism in experimental biology.
