ABSTRACT

The reported work was concerned with Life Cycle Analysis of automotive electric machines and power electronics. The aim was to improve the modelling of these parts and examine the prospects of onshoring manufacturing within the UK. The motor and inverter unit were accountable for 12-17% of the embedded carbon emissions in the electric powertrain. The benefit in onshoring the manufacturing of these parts varied between 7-33% reduction in equivalent CO2 relative to key regions of interest, primarily associated with the clean UK electricity grid. The work has demonstrated the potential of battery “rightsizing” and the environmental benefits of range extension via renewable fuels.
