ABSTRACT

How can all participants develop their design capabilities to contribute fully to the design process, and enable us to make the most of all the existing knowledge and skills? That is the central question that Remko van der Lugt is trying to answer. In his research, he likes to be inspired by the metaphor of the designer as a midwife: “it is about creating a safe space for people to gain insights and conceptualize.” In “Systemic Co-Design,” Van der Lugt shares his extensive experience in facilitating co-design processes. He no longer wants to design for others but with others. In this process, curiosity is essential for designers. It is equally important to approach people and situations with an empathic attitude. Only then will a fruitful process for all parties be created.
