ABSTRACT

The multitude of perspectives in this publication reflects an academic discussion about the how, what, and why of applied design research. Although it is tempting to conclude with a ‘final’ definition, the editors have chosen not to do so. Instead, they aim to map the rapidly developing landscape of applied design research, showing how it bridges the worlds of research and design. In the epilogue, several questions are introduced that may lead to a shared research agenda, focussing on the type of knowledge developed, how to distinguish and generalize this knowledge, and the quality and ethical criteria that should be met for the new knowledge to be valid and reliable. By bringing up these questions, the editors expect applied design research to reach maturity in even more areas than those already presented in this book.
