ABSTRACT

Designing is not only for designers. From physiotherapists to facility managers, every professional occasionally designs. However, most professionals are hardly trained to design, and therefore quickly fall back on the analytical approach they are familiar with, where research leads to an understanding of the problem and hopefully to ideas for a design, or at least design requirements. To change this, Guido Stompff, in “Design Thinking for Professionals,” describes his research toward “educating nondesigners in design thinking,” in which he aims to develop a design research process for many kinds of professionals. Through several steps, any professional can develop a new perspective and new knowledge, even without a design background. In this process, envisioning can completely change the problem statement and vice versa.
