ABSTRACT

Applied design research is moralistic; after all, it strives for the “good,” such as a more sustainable world, a more inclusive society, or better healthcare. At the same time, that moralistic mission raises delicate questions: What is “better”? Better for whom? And why is it better? Applied design research is anything but value-free. In his chapter, “Idealistic Visions of the Future or Realistic Solutions?,” Peter Joore advocates translating idealistic visions of the future into realistic solutions in the here and now. In this mission, the researcher focuses on explaining the truth, and thus on making a truth judgment, and the designer is focused on creating value and making a value judgment. Two goals that, according to Joore, complement each other perfectly.
