ABSTRACT

As a futurist, Tessa Cramer connects with the past and the future to help others make informed choices in the now. There is much to learn from futurists, she concludes. In “Designing the Future,” she explains that creating future solutions requires fresh perspectives that old systems cannot imagine. That is why she encourages her students to hack the current systems in a friendly way. Cramer chooses a speculative approach to make people think. Her goal in this exercise is to teach people to deal with uncertainty. Her contribution is a plea for a future-oriented design approach in which creatives, artists, and designers contribute to thinking processes concerning societal issues.
