ABSTRACT

In this chapter, active rheology control of cementitious materials by adding magnetic mineral particles in combination with exploiting an external magnetic field is illustrated. The theoretical background and underlying mechanisms of magneto-rheology control are first introduced. The magnetic properties of nano-Fe3O4 particles, magnetic fly ash, blast furnace slag, copper slag and stainless steel slag are then demonstrated. The influences of mixture proportion parameters such as cement paste medium and physical characteristics of magnetic particles on the microstructural evolution and dynamic rheological properties of cementitious paste under various external magnetic fields are revealed in detail. The application of some other potential minerals such as metal fibres and scraps, blast furnace slag, copper slag and stainless steel slag in magneto-rheology control of cementitious materials is briefly displayed. At last, a short summary of the state of the-art and an outlook are given.
