ABSTRACT

From the results obtained during an exploration campaign, the correlation between CPTU resistance and the undrained shear strength of soft clays at the valley of Mexico, is evaluated in this paper. This campaign consisted of 50 piezocone penetration tests, 50 soil sampling borings and laboratory tests carried out on more than 300 undisturbed soil samples recovered along 10 square kilometers. The samples were tested by means of unconfined compression and unconsolidated undrained triaxial compression tests. The correlation of the determined undrained shear strength and the experienced CPTU results was evaluated and the empirical cone factor (Nkt) was determined for all tests. The main innovation lies in the fact that for the eastern zone of the Valley of Mexico, the geotechnical characterization is not abundant and there are information gaps for this and other design parameters.
