ABSTRACT

Indonesia is a country with a diverse society that potentially causes conflicts to occur between cultures, races, ethnicities, and religions. The theory used in this study is the theory of multicultural education from James A. Banks. The purpose of this study is to analyze the implementation of multicultural education in Indonesia. The method used is qualitative. The researchers identified various concepts in the literature and checked for patterns, parallels, and regularities. A systematic analysis of the literature was used to analyze the implementation of multicultural education. Data were collected online and 11 related studies were selected for further identification. The data shows that multicultural education in Indonesia is carried out by (1) integrating subjects with multicultural education; (2) through school culture; and (3) through local wisdom. Researchers conclude that multicultural education in Indonesia is not well organized, but can still be integrated into subjects with support from teachers, principals, education staff, and school management. Further research can be undertaken by looking at schools that claim to be multicultural and are applying multicultural theories appropriately.
