ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze progressive Muslim gender activism in responding to socio-political situations that affect women with a case study of the Fiqh an-Nisa program P3M/Rahima. The author will analyze the publication material and activities of the Fiqh an-Nisa program P3M/Rahima uses discourse analysis to study the relationship between gender, power, and ideology in Indonesia. Rahima contributed significantly to reforming Islamic discourse on gender by shifting the tendency of previous religious scripturalism that adhered to the ideology of gender inequality to become Islamic feminism which aspires to gender equality. Rahima actively disseminates her ideas about gender equality in Islam through programs to increase gender awareness and empower women, especially women in the Muslim community. However, such activism is influenced by the broader state power structure and local socio-political dynamics. Rahima was criticized for not only focusing on reforming Islamic discourse and implying that religion was the only contributing factor to the subordinated and marginalized position of Muslim women. In a narrowing backlash from conservative forces, it has to some extent, forced Rahima to deal with several negotiations about their progressive ideas and must exercise self-censorship and caution. Rahima's methods, paradigms, arguments, and implementation techniques for gender equality must be formulated systematically. Thus, it is hoped that there will be a democratic dialogue with various methods, primarily directed at groups that demand such explanations.
