ABSTRACT

One of the proofs of the Qur’an's miracles and beauty is the variety of pronunciation and uniqueness of meaning. In fact, each of these words has a distinct meaning and function that is not apparent in other words. This fact necessitates the disclosure of the maqāṣid of each lafaz used in the Qur’an, one of which is the term ‘adl. The purpose of using the term ‘adl in the Qur’an from the perspective of Ibn ‘Āsyūr is explored in this paper. What is the meaning of the maqāṣid term ‘adl in the Qur’an? This article employs a qualitative method with content analysis and interpretation of Ibn ‘Āsyūr maqāṣidī. According to the data, the meaning of ‘adl in general includes al-kayl (measurement), al-jaza’ (reward), al-farīḍah (obligation), al-nāfilah (sunnah), al-fida’ (ransom), al-sawiyyah (equal), and al-istiqāmah (straight). The term ‘adl and its derivation appear 28 times, while ism maṣdar appears 14 times. According to the author, the maqāṣid term ‘adl includes the following: (1) the existence of similarities between objects is confirmed. The use of ism maṣdar on the term ‘adl in the Qur’an aims to restore the original function of the ism maṣdar term ‘adl, which can be applied to the lafaz mu’annats and mużakkar; (2) to build peace; and (3) to serve as a universal concept in managing affairs.
