ABSTRACT

The implications of technological development and change are vast, but how these implications are evaluated varies drastically. While some – the techno-optimists and Prometheans stand out – see humanity’s savior in technology, others argue that technology is partly to blame for a situation perceived to be undesirable and detrimental to sustainable development. Examples of the latter camp are those who call for various versions of degrowth and decentralization as radical solutions to our current ailments, arguing that endless growth in a finite world is bound to be disastrous. But what is the role of technology in such radical futures, and could technology be imagined to contribute to the good in these futures, as opposed to being to blame for the worse alternatives?
