ABSTRACT

Construction activities cause a significant harm to the environment. This harm requires built environment professionals (BEPs) to carry out construction activities in a sustainable way. While numerous studies have identified the benefits of sustainable construction, a limited number of previous studies have identified the benefits of BEPs with competencies for sustainable construction projects (SCPs). The purpose of this study, therefore, was to discover the benefits of having skilled BEPs for SCPs in South Africa. To achieve the purpose of the study a constructivism philosophy was adopted. Twenty-one respondents were purposively sampled and interviewed. The findings were: sustainable solution; public health and safety; client satisfaction; efficient use of resources; and good reputation. It can be inferred that the construction industry will benefit greatly from the BEPs with competencies for SCPs. Therefore, it is recommended that the government make it a requirement for professionals working on SCPs to have the essential competencies.
