ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews how gender is present in the sustainable management of water resources. It argues that addressing gender-specific roles, needs, and benefits in all water concerns, including availability and scarcity, pollution, and technical viability, leads to major improvements in the sector. It shows “by cases” that women’s involvement alongside men has brought distinct benefits in efficiency and sustainability. However, a true gender balance, through which burdens and benefits are shared equitably, is a challenge that remains to be achieved.
