ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the relationship between workplace diversity and high-performance workplace outcomes. First, it presents an expanded definition of high-performance workplace that incorporates productivity, firm governance, employee well-being, and social responsibility. Then, it outlines the meaning of diversity, and different types of diversity, before turning to theoretical approaches that have been used to explain the relationship between diversity and high-performance workplace outcomes. This framing is followed by a review of the scientific evidence about the relationship between different forms of workplace diversity and indicators of a high-performance workplace, including potential moderators of those relationships. Throughout the chapter key implications for organisational policies and practices are presented to enhance high-performance organisational outcomes by managing workplace diversity more effectively.
