This chapter describes the mobile evolution and its highlights. It considers 5G technologies focus on new application areas which are not yet covered by mobile communication systems. Mobile communication is older than many today’s users would expect. After World War II a lot of mobile communication systems based on analog technology were deployed in different countries. A totally change in the mobile communication began with the development of first digital systems in the eighties of the last century with first deployments 1992. Although 4G Technology is still in rollout a lot of research- and industry activities have started already. New device types like probes, sensors, meters, machines, control computers etc. will significantly contribute to that increase. The next phase of mobile communication is to integrate industry, energy, mobility, real estate, and its processes.
