ABSTRACT

Smart Cities are able to offer efficient services for creating more sustainable environments. However, this will require stakeholders to have access to suitable testbed infrastructure for prototyping new services. This chapter describes the underlying federated testbed infrastructure, designed and implemented within the EU TRESCIMO project, to support Smart City experimentation. The focal point of this chapter is to share the technical challenges on the design and implementation decisions made to provide a sustainable state of the art federated testbed infrastructure between the Technical University of Berlin (TUB) and the University of Cape Town (UCT). The starting point for this testbed implementation is the layered TRESCIMO Smart City reference architecture, onto which existing standard compliant and SDN/NFV based testbed toolkits have been mapped. The chapter describes these toolkits and their integration within the context ofTRESCIMO. Furthermore, it will outline how this SDN-based infrastructure setup can be utilised in future FIRE SDN projects, such as SoftFIRE.
