ABSTRACT

Manufacturing industry is the driving force for EU renaissance and recovery from the economic crisis. This chapter aims at investigating the enormous innovation potential of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies when fully adopted not just in the production of physical goods, but in all activities performed by Manufacturing Industries, both in the pre-production and in the post-production phases. It includes the Factories of the Future Public-Private Partnership perspective to IoT for Manufacturing. As the IoT expands, cybersecurity will have to be considered at every point, and common, sector-specific threats will need to be identified. Security requirements that are unique to CPS will have to be determined. Future ICT tools and technologies will give companies multiple opportunities, such as increases in efficiency and quality throughout value chains, the exploitation of additional markets, and manufacturing that is highly responsive to changing market and customer demands.
