ABSTRACT

The Internet of Things (IoT) introduces itself as a basic set of technological enablers to support the provision of innovative applications that can improve the quality of life of people and industrial productivity. IoT is increasingly supported by various stakeholders and market players that see clear business opportunities in this field. This chapter discusses the challenges for security and privacy in a hyperconnected world where humans are assisted by machines and technology, but not watched by or through them. It discusses the importance of protecting not only the data, but the metadata as well to ensure that the communication stays unobservable, providing also countermeasures regarding how to be protected from network traffic analysis. The chapter provides a discussion on enforcing security and privacy in the “Cloud”, as more and more IoT systems are utilizing the cloud both for storage and processing of the IoT data.
