ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author recounts her personal journey as a designer who transitioned from traditional product design to pioneering the design space of social robotics. Discussing the experience with the design of Moxi, a healthcare robot, the author illustrates the challenges and complexity of designing robots for the real world, which requires a deep understanding of contexts and people, as well as a capacity for learning from emerging human–robot relationships. Building on this experience, the author provides key principles for robot design and stresses the importance of collaborative and iterative design practices.
