ABSTRACT

This paper presents the results of implementing erosion control techniques with geosynthetics on Brazilian Hydroelectric Power Plants (HPPs) reservoirs. Different erosion control techniques were applied in 2016 in two experimental units installed in the margins of the Porto Colômbia and Volta Grande HPPs. The performance of the analyzed sections was assessed qualitatively using a performance matrix that collected and summarized data over a monitoring period of four years. The performance was also assessed by differential bathymetry studies performed in 2016 and 2020 in the HPPs margins. This work highlights the benefits of implementing geosynthetic materials in margin erosion control techniques, taking advantage of its properties, ease of installation and durability, and evidence the importance of monitoring the techniques to know the long-term performance. The erosion control technique with Geomat in a roll showed the best results in all the analyzed sections.
