ABSTRACT
From ancient times, the human body has adopted the condition in which it is meant to live. However, human beings tend to make it comfortable based on the building design that has been modified throughout the period. In the 21st century, building design and technology have been developed based on environmental liveability for human beings. So, it is essential to know about human comfort in detail to make a comfortable thermal ambiance. This chapter deals with the comfort of human beings in different situations, ages, gender, and geographic locations. The chapter starts with basic terminology, the mathematical model for the thermal comfort requirement, and the body’s thermoregulatory system for self-defence against changes in environmental conditions. Various indices have been discussed based on factors affecting thermal comfort in a building envelope. Understanding the critical facts that cause a human being to experience thermal discomfort is also necessary for human comfort. Hence the significant causes of thermal discomfort are discussed later. Moreover, for human well-being, different international standards are discussed.
