ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces maritime work, on the ship's bridge – navigation and anti-collision – and in the engine room, monitoring and running the machinery. It describes the evolution of technological aids and looks to future possible developments. The chapter uses the MUNIN project as a case in point, and briefly presents the speed of change and the place for humans in this development. The authors explain the project expectations and early results and how that led to where we are today.
