ABSTRACT
The Mota-Engil Engenharia S.A. Special Foundations Department executed the stabilization contract of the North Cliff of Azenhas do Mar located in Sintra for the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA). The intervened area extended along the northern Cliff section under the urban core of Azenhas do Mar with about 125 m of development and a maximum height of 45 m. This project was developed with two key objectives. The first was the need to seek to preserve the core of traditional housing that were built on top of the Cliff, considered of great patrimonial interest; the second with the requirement to increase the level of security of the area overlooking the restaurant and the ocean pool, built at the base of the Cliff whose attendance increases significantly during the Summer. The great exposure of this Cliff, either to the direct action of sea wave, or to atmospheric phenomena, more specifically to the formation of fog and fog with some persistence, contributes to a process of continuous erosion that was causing its progressive retreat, thus endangering the stability of buildings and other structures that are built at their top, especially those that are closer to the edge.It is intended to address in the first place the challenge of accessing the work area since it was delimited to the west by the sea and east by the buildings of Azenhas do Mar housing core. At the same time will also be addressed the means involved in the execution of work, deforestation, reperfilation of the Cliff, nailing, sprayed concrete and recovery and execution of new walls of mortar stone, procedures adopted, as well as the complexity related to the execution of works of this nature in a protected and national interest landscape.
