ABSTRACT
Landslips continue to impart significant safety risk, disruption, and financial impact in the Southern Region of Network Rail (NR). Between 2019 and 2022 there were over 50 landslips (earthwork failures) per annum, causing between 7 and 9 line closures a year. The impact also has a significant financial burden, with annual repair and delay costs increasing by over £120m. An improvement / game changer was required to reverse the trend. The scope of the project was to consider a more radical identification and assessment methodology beyond the earthwork examination approach currently being undertaken.
