ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to evaluate a framework for sustainable human settlement building methods for low-cost housing in the Northern Cape Province. The objectives were to assess drivers and barriers and propose recommendations for a suitable framework. The study involved 15 participants from the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement, and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA) in the City of Kimberly specifically the Sol Plaatje Municipality. Qualitative research methods were employed, including semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. Nine key themes emerged, addressing the research objectives. Recommendations included a buyer-supplier code, well-structured policies, and procedures for housing projects, and the establishment of project management offices. Other suggestions included conducting feasibility studies, providing training for managers and officers, and adopting innovative approaches to affordable housing structures. Implementing the recommendations could lay the foundation for a new sustainable framework for low-cost housing in the Northern Cape Province.
