ABSTRACT

Vibration test is one of the quantitative inspection methods, but it is expected that the plane geometry of bridges will affect the results of vibration test. In skewed bridges, there are several cases of bearings failing due to girder rotation during earthquakes, and the skew angle may affect the dynamic behavior of the bridge. The authors created bridge specimens to investigate the effect of skew angle on the vibration characteristics of bridges. The skew angle was varied from 60° to 90° in 10° increments to investigate how the natural frequency changes. In addition, the authors performed the FEM analysis to complement the experimental results. Experimental and analytical results show that the primary natural frequencies increase due to the skew angle. And factors such as bearing conditions were also affect the vibration characteristics.
