ABSTRACT
Replacement of damaged rivets with new ones is beneficial from both mechanical and landscape perspectives; however, this method of repair is not widely adopted due to issues with constructability. Although it is acknowledged that rivets with smaller flanges can be formed with less load, the extent of axial force introduced into these rivets is not yet determined. In this study, the mechanism of axial force introduction during the rivet’s cooling process and the relationship between the axial force and size of the rivet flange were numerically investigated. Results indicated that there is a minimum flange size to keep required axial force in rivets.
