ABSTRACT

This paper delves into the Danish Road Directorate’s (DRD) vision for a modernised asset management model. DRD manages the Danish national road network comprising 3800 km of road and 2400 structures and has over the past 40 years developed well-defined asset management process and solutions. Due to the technical debt in its IT-infrastructure, DRD is currently implementing new software solutions which have opened up for the development of a new asset management model. DRD’s vision for the new asset management emphasises uniformity across assets and introduces functions like cross-asset optimisation and assessment of sub-optimum strategies. A governance framework ensures data quality and performance benchmarks, while automation plays a pivotal role in objective condition assessments and data collection. The implications of the new model on bridge assets are explored, with an evolving role for bridge engineers and the potential for enhanced under-standing of asset behaviour through artificial intelligence (AI).
