ABSTRACT

An intelligent traffic management system (ITMS) was developed and implemented in the city of Ahmedabad to control unruly traffic and minimise traffic violations at major junctions in the city. AI-based cameras were fitted upon over 60 traffic junctions to detect traffic violations. The camera would snap evidence images at high speed, automatically pick up the number plate, access the vehicular database, and identify vehicle owners. The challan issuing process was automated as well.

The ITMS generates over 1 lakh e-challans a day for over 60 junctions, with police dispatching at least 30,000 challans (15 times more challans) every day. This has led to better discipline on the roads of Ahmedabad. Other benefits include tracking lost or stolen vehicular data and tracking vehicles that are involved in criminal activities. In this way, artificial intelligence supports the police in maintaining order in the city.
