ABSTRACT

Medical physics, an interdisciplinary field applying physics to medicine, plays a critical role in advancing healthcare globally. This chapter explores career paths within medical physics – clinical practice, academia, research, industry, and global health initiatives – emphasizing their contributions to addressing healthcare disparities. Clinical physicists ensure the safe and effective use of radiation in patient care, implementing quality assurance, dosimetry, and advanced treatment protocols. Academic physicists shape future professionals and innovate through teaching and research. Researchers drive advancements in diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, focusing on affordability and sustainability. Industry professionals bridge innovation and application, developing and disseminating medical technologies worldwide. Global health initiatives focus on improving cancer care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) through policy advocacy, capacity building, and infrastructure development.

Each career path contributes uniquely to global health, from training local professionals to developing cost-effective technologies. Challenges such as funding limitations, resource inequities, and workforce shortages are countered by emerging opportunities, including AI-driven tools, interdisciplinary research, and public–private collaborations. Together, medical physicists leverage expertise and innovation to bridge healthcare inequities, shape cancer care policies, and foster sustainable healthcare systems. Their collective efforts underline the transformative role of medical physics in achieving equitable healthcare access and outcomes globally.
