ABSTRACT

This chapter has a deep discussion on the necessity of 5G in healthcare. What 5G Wireless technology could mean for the healthcare industry? 5G could change healthcare as we know it, providing high bandwidth and low latency for immediate data processing capabilities that can help to create better patient outcomes at a lower overall cost. This chapter discusses this by profiling specific aspects such as edge computing, network slicing, software-defined networking (SDN), and APIs and interoperability that are critical to a 5G architecture in healthcare. It also discusses use cases of 5G found in healthcare such as telemedicine, remote patient monitoring, personalized medicine, and AI/ML applications. Additionally, it provides a summary of the potential pitfalls and prospects if the healthcare industry starts embracing this 5G technology, which can blend seamlessly into the changing face of future healthcare at large.
