ABSTRACT

This paper aims to explain China's potential to play a role in developing smart cities, especially in overcoming the environment problems. Due to China's significant contribution to carbon emissions and its potential to increase with urbanization, China's attempts to develop smart cities as one of the central national policies can contribute to addressing global environmental issues. This paper uses qualitative methods with secondary data. As a conceptual framework, the author uses Dameri's concept of smartness. The result is that China does have the potential to be influential in handling environmental issues through its smart city projects. In addition, China also desires to become a leader in smart city development. This is because China has developed smart cities as a national priority with various investments in research and technology development that involve the government and the private sector. China also puts forward the effectiveness of its smart city, which benefits the community through ease of service and a sustainable environment.
