ABSTRACT
Complex development of underground space is typical for most megacities of the world. Large Russian cities are not an exception. Since the mid-1970s, Russia has been carrying out systematic urban development of the underground space of cities, developed the basic principles of its territorial zoning, methods of determining planning priorities, taking into account historical, planning, geological and resource features of cities, sanitary-hygienic and planning re-strictions. On the example of the cities of Moscow and Yekaterinburg, an overview of approaches to the development of underground space in Russia is given. The results of the system analysis of the underground space development directions in Yekaterinburg and the results obtained on the basis of the previously implemented empirical approach in determining the priority directions of Moscow underground space development are compared.
