ABSTRACT

The assigned rock quality from Q- and RMR classification systems drives the planning and estimation of rock support and can affect the estimated budget of most projects that involve rock excavation. To our knowledge, only equations relating Q- and RMR final values have been proposed to date. Here, a new equation is proposed which correlates the Jr/Ja ratio of the Q-system to the condition of discontinuities of the RMR-system directly. The correlation is based on descriptions in the RMR classification table and has been empirically verified with mapping data from tunnels and drill-core logging. The proposed equation establishes a quick tool for data analysis and quality control of mapping datasets in all stages of infrastructure or mining projects. Through this correlation, unreasonable discrepancies, and potential errors between the joint condition parameters among systems, can be easily recognized.
