ABSTRACT
The “Américo Vespucio Oriente” AVO 2 Concession promoted by the Chilean Ministry of Public Works will close the external Ring Road of Santiago de Chile to highway standard. AVO 2 considers the construction of an urban highway concession of 5.2 km, consisting of two twin tunnels, three lanes in each direction, under the existing avenue Américo Vespucio/Ossa and under the existing Metro Line 4 between the Prince of Wales and Grecia stations. The project includes three exit branches and three entrances, totalizing app. 12.5 km of tunnel length. The tunnels will be excavated in three different geotechnical scenarios. The city of Santiago is in one the most seismic areas in the earth, so seismicity has been a major issue in the tunnel design. The construction of the tunnel has been initiated in January 2024 and it is foreseen to be finished in 2028.
