ABSTRACT
The field of Architecture, Engineering, and Construction has experienced a notable transformation with the introduction of digital solutions. This study explores digital applications, including generative modeling, structural design, real-time data analysis, and edge computing, to examine their impact on the tunnel design. The application of automation techniques offers several advantages, such as iterative adjustments of the tunnel design due to changed boundary conditions or the utilization of optimization solvers to improve the structural design. Based on a case study, this paper proposes an automated approach that leverages various software tools and visual programming techniques to enhance design quality and precision, improve project efficiency, and enable the engineers to focus on relevant design decisions. This paper further discusses pros and cons of an automated workflow, and the findings highlight tangible improvements in design efficiency, sustainability, and quality. Results underline the importance of wider implementation of these technologies in the field of tunneling.
