ABSTRACT
Cargo sous terrain (CST) aims to revolutionize single-load freight traffic in Switzerland through a private sector initiative. The project pursues the approach “people above ground – goods underground” and proposes to transport freight in small units via a new tunnel network. At the final stage, the entire network will comprise a tunnel system with a total length of 500 km. This paper first describes the unique project, including its boundary conditions and the geological and hydrogeological context. It then focusses on tunnel-related aspects and highlights technical and organizational challenges encountered during the preliminary design phase, which concluded in early 2024.
