ABSTRACT
The expansion of the current King Khalid international airport into the King Salman international airport (KSIA) is the answer to the needs of a growing economy committed to bring progress while meeting environmental needs of present and future generations. This development sets also a Legacy based on an integrated design which is smart, innovative, conscious of the Climate Change, and even aspiring for ecological benefits. In that progressive design, the use of the Underground space plays a pivotal role. Metro and Railway Lines, Road network, energy, water, and other service networks are all to be taken care-of within the harmonic expansion of the airport but also mindful of the urban developments planned in the area. This paper describes how the collective experience “in tunnelling” puts at the program disposition a set of configurations to address these requirements using the underground space with a combination of different types of multiple purpose use tunnels, assembling a safe, resilient, and future proof network.
