ABSTRACT
A large-diameter shaft sink might adopt the technique of the large-diameter ground freezing iced wall, which has the same technical requirements as the medium one might have, such as for the strength, safety factor and stability, and expansion deformation to heave. But it has its special and distinct structure issues, for instance, ratio of height and ratio of thickness to inner or outer diameter of iced wall related to structure strength and buckling.
This paper is to create a structure model of thick cylindrical shell for it and apply its design principles of the model for a maximum excavation of around 18.288 meter (60 – foot) diameter and very deep ground freezing shaft sinking (GFSS). It intends to create a case to close the real construction work and to explore and establish the key structure design method and procedure for its thickness, diameter and space of freeze pipe (FP) as well as FP quantity after some knowledge and experiences have been obtained.
