ABSTRACT
HS2 is an ambitious engineering feat of unprecedented scale and the largest infrastructure project in Europe at the moment. In the London area it includes the design and construction of several Sprayed Concrete Lining (SCL) structures including the Old Oak Common (OOC) Tunnels in West London. The OOC SCL Tunnels have been a critical stepping-stone to the project’s success being the first large scale horizontal excavations linked to the launch of two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) for the construction of the Northolt East Tunnels. With different constraints in terms of location, alignment and interface with third party assets, a holistic approach was implemented both in design and construction to achieve their successful delivery. This paper describes the design process and construction progress of the OOC SCL West Tunnels, including the development of design from its early stages to an integrated construction program and the successful delivery of the tunnels.
