ABSTRACT
Integrating Measurement While Drilling (MWD) technology into tunnel construction enhances real-time geological insights and optimizes excavation processes. By developing a proprietary MWD interpretation model at Skanska and integrating it with advanced visualization tools like Novorender and Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology, we address limitations of existing data systems. Our findings demonstrate increased operational efficiency, improved information management, and more accurate decision-making through predictive geological models. We highlight challenges in adopting digital strategies within the tunneling industry—such as data accessibility and integration barriers—and emphasize the need to standardize MWD data practices and fully integrate them into BIM frameworks. This approach creates a comprehensive digital model, advancing toward the highest BIM maturity stage, improving efficiency, accuracy, and sustainability while reducing CO₂ emissions. The successful application at two major Skanska projects in Norway showcases its potential to improve tunnel construction works by enhancing excavation workflows, increasing predictability and reducing grout consumption.
