ABSTRACT

Under the terms of an agreement reached by Autostrade per l’Italia with the Liguria Region, the Port Authority, and the Municipality of Genoa on October 14, 2021, work on the 2003-conceived Subport Tunnel project may now proceed. The plan calls for tunnels to be built under the water in the central basin of the Port of Genova in Italy, having the same features as an urban road. Three lanes in each direction run the length of the 4.2 km tunnels that separate the two carriageways. The Hydroshield TBM being used for the excavation has a massive 15.935 m diameter and will be lined with a ring of 55 cm thick precast pieces. This project is in response to the need to replace the existing elevated road “Sopraelevata” that connects the western and eastern parts of the city with one that is more efficient and safer.
