ABSTRACT
The International Tunnelling Association (ITA) has published “ITA Document Volume 1: Recommendations for the Application of the ISO 19650 Series During the Delivery of Underground Structures,” primarily addressing ISO 19650 Parts 1 and 2. The ISO 19650 series provides a comprehensive framework for managing information throughout the lifecycle of built assets, focusing on the organisation and digitisation of information through building information modelling (BIM). While Volume 1 emphasises the design and construction phases, this paper identifies the need to integrate ISO 19650 Parts 3, 4, and 5 to address the operational phase, information exchange, and security-minded information management practices, respectively. By aligning the ITA guidelines with these additional standards, this paper aims to provide enhanced guidance for managing the unique complexities of underground construction projects, including extensive data coordination and long-term operational requirements. The proposed amendments will support more robust decision-making, reduce risks associated with information mismanagement, and ensure collaborative and secure data practices. ITA Working Group 22 is leading efforts to incorporate these amendments into a forthcoming Volume 2 guideline, tailored to the specific needs of the tunnelling industry. This paper outlines the steps and industry-driven approaches necessary to achieve consistent, efficient, and secure information management practices across the asset lifecycle.
