ABSTRACT

Central Nippon Expressway Co., Ltd. is implementing a project that alleviates traffic congestion on the Chuo Expressway between HACHIOJI JCT and SAGAMIKO IC near the kobotoke Tunnel. For its alleviation, a separate tunnel has been planned and is currently under construction in order to add lanes to the section that includes the tunnel. At first, an existing access road was set to use as a construction road between the tunnel site and the temporary spoil bank for tunnel muck. However, the road was narrow and steep. In addition, heavy dump trucks had to run directly over the portal of existing main tunnel due to constraints on the area of construction yard, and a temporary bridge had to be constructed to widen the construction road. Under these site constraints, an enclosed hanging conveyor was adopted as an alternative to heavy dump trucks, which also ensured the safety of workers and minimized the impact on the existing main tunnel. This paper will report the background of the study and the results of its introduction.
