ABSTRACT
Catherine, a junior resident, navigates a day filled with urgent surgeries and emotional strain. A high school teacher arrives with vague complaints that turn out be caused by a devastating advanced cancer. Though initially dismissive, Catherine quickly realizes the gravity of his condition. Flooded by the relentless pace of the ER, she postpones delivering the bad news and is forced to reckon with the human cost of delay. His condition rapidly deteriorates, and he dies without ever knowing the truth. The chapter captures the tension between professional detachment and the personal toll of caregiving, showing life and death unfolding quietly in the shadows of a hectic hospital environment.
