ABSTRACT
This review article examines the latest development of underground energy storage (UES) policies and technologies in China since the enforcement of China’s Energy Law in 2025. It highlights the UES milestones including the supportive policies issued by the central and provincial governments and demonstrates the challenges and potential development levels for the industry. The article concludes that the UES is becoming a critical component of China’s energy transition strategy. With strong policy support, new technological innovation of the UES lies ahead.
