ABSTRACT
This study investigates using artificial intelligence (AI), specifically ChatGPT, as a digital language learning assistant in foreign language instruction at higher education institutions in Indonesia. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research combines quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to explore users' experiences with ChatGPT. The findings reveal that many students utilise ChatGPT as a language learning tool, contributing to improvements in their language skills. However, several challenges persist, including technical limitations, insufficient lecturer training, and resistance to adopting new teaching methods. The discussion highlights the need for greater support, such as comprehensive training for educators and improved technical infrastructure, to fully harness the benefits of ChatGPT in language education. Despite these challenges, the study concludes that ChatGPT holds significant potential to enhance foreign language teaching in higher education. Additionally, the study recommends strategies for improving lecturer training and integrating AI into the curriculum to optimise its educational impact.
